Is this the worst offseason ever for the New York Yankees? That's the burning question on the minds of many fans as the team enters what could be the final, high-performance years of superstar Aaron Judge. But are the Yankees' front-office moves reflecting that urgency? Let's dive in.
Recent reports suggest the Yankees' actions this offseason are, frankly, disappointing. Negotiations with potential acquisitions like Cody Bellinger seem to be stalling, leaving fans feeling underwhelmed.
Adding insult to injury, the Yankees were caught off guard by Trent Grisham's acceptance of a qualifying offer. Since then, the team's acquisitions and re-signings have been, at best, modest. We're talking about players like Amed Rosario, Ryan Yarbrough, Paul Blackburn, and Ryan Weathers.
Meanwhile, other teams are making waves. The Baltimore Orioles are having a stellar offseason, and the Toronto Blue Jays have also made significant moves. Compared to these rivals, the Yankees' inactivity is glaring. Even the Boston Red Sox, who were relatively quiet for a while, have had a more impactful offseason, especially with their addition of Ranger Suárez.
But here's where it gets controversial... Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer recently put the Yankees at the top of his list of teams with the worst offseasons.
Rymer wrote, "(The Yankees) seem to be treating their offseason shopping as an optional exercise." He further pointed out that even securing Cody Bellinger, which should be a straightforward move, is proving difficult for the team.
Rymer added, "These are the Yankees we’re talking about. No move is supposed to be too big, so no fan should be forgiving of how they’ve made only small moves so far."
And this is the part most people miss... Rymer also noted that, despite projections placing the Yankees as the fourth-best team in MLB this year, these projections are based on assumptions about players like Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, and even Giancarlo Stanton. He concludes that the Yankees should not be content with their current state.
So, what do you think? Are the Yankees making the right moves, or are they falling short of expectations? Do you agree with the assessment that this is one of their worst offseasons? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
