A Game-Changer for Women's Cricket: BCCI Levels the Playing Field with Historic Pay Hike
In a move that's sure to send ripples through the cricketing world, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a groundbreaking revision to its pay structure, effectively bridging the financial gap between men's and women's domestic cricket. Women cricketers in India are now set to receive a substantial boost in their match fees, bringing them virtually on par with their male counterparts in domestic competitions. This landmark decision, approved by the BCCI's Apex Council on December 22nd, signifies a significant step towards gender equality in Indian cricket.
Breaking Down the Numbers:
Under the revised structure, women players in the Playing XI will earn a daily fee of INR 50,000 for both one-day and multi-day domestic matches. This marks a dramatic increase from the previous INR 20,000 per match. Non-playing members will also see a significant rise, receiving INR 25,000 per match, up from INR 10,000. For T20 matches, the Playing XI will earn INR 25,000, while reserves will receive INR 12,500.
This revised structure extends to junior cricket tournaments as well, with Playing XI members earning INR 25,000 per day and reserves INR 12,500. T20 matches will see fees of INR 12,500 for the first XI and INR 6,250 for non-playing members.
And this is the part most people miss: This hike translates to a substantial increase in seasonal earnings. As a BCCI note highlights, a senior woman cricketer previously earned around INR 2 lakh for a season if her team only participated in league stages. With the new structure, this figure is set to rise dramatically.
Beyond the Players: Umpires and Match Referees Get a Boost Too
The BCCI's generosity doesn't stop with the players. The Apex Council has also proposed a revised fee structure for umpires and match referees, aiming for consistency and fairness across all on-field officials.
Umpires officiating in league matches of domestic tournaments will now receive a uniform fee of INR 40,000 per day, regardless of their previous grouping. Knockout matches will command a higher fee of INR 50,000 - INR 60,000 per day, reflecting the increased pressure and responsibility associated with these crucial fixtures.
This revised structure will also be extended to the 79 match referees, ensuring they receive the same daily fees as umpires for both league and knockout matches.
