This doesn't imply those issues vanished upon his arrival in Dallas. Coach Brian Schottenheimer mentioned that Pickens was still occasionally late, and several sources indicated that Pickens received fines during the season.”
This statement has been twisted into a false narrative that Archer reported the Cowboys fined Pickens multiple times. That's simply not what Archer conveyed.
One specific incident that came to light during the season involved Pickens and fellow receiver CeeDee Lamb being benched early in a Monday night game against the Raiders. Owner Jerry Jones later confirmed that Pickens missed a team bus. (It wasn't publicly disclosed whether Pickens faced a fine for that particular infraction as well.)
But here's where it gets interesting: Did it truly matter in the grand scheme of things? Pickens's performance in that very same game, despite missing the opening series, led Jones to shower him with praise: “It was poetic the way that he was making those moves out there. It was like he was in an opera or something out there. A ballet.”
The larger, more critical question is whether the team's strategy to manage Pickens might eventually involve strategically leaking information that could make him less appealing to other teams. If another team is prepared to offer him a substantial contract, say around $40 million per year, it would certainly complicate the Cowboys' efforts to retain him. Conversely, if no other team is hinting at offering more than the Cowboys are willing to pay, Pickens might opt to accept what his current team offers.
For the moment, it doesn't appear that the Cowboys have initiated a deliberate smear campaign. However, they still could. The team's apparent willingness to commit $28 million to Pickens via the franchise tag suggests they are comfortable with him being a part of the team for 2026 and beyond. This commitment should carry more weight than any subtle hints or whispers that might originate from the team.
