In a thrilling display of curling prowess, Brad Gushue and Nathan Young emerged victorious at the Brier championships in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The duo's success on Sunday afternoon was a testament to their skill and determination, as they secured wins against Ontario and Prince Edward Island (PEI) respectively.
Gushue's team started strong, taking a 2-0 lead early on against Ontario. This momentum continued, and with a strategic double in the 9th end, they sealed an impressive 8-4 victory. Meanwhile, Young's rink engaged in a close battle with PEI, trading the hammer throughout the game. However, it was in the 10th end that Young's team truly shined, scoring three points for a dramatic 9-8 win.
As the veteran skip Brad Gushue reflects on his swan song, he reveals that the nerves of the first game have gradually subsided. "The nerves we're feeling are far less than what they were in the first game," he shared with VOCM News. "We're getting settled, more comfortable, and developing a better feel for the ice. Once you're comfortable with the ice, those nerves ease off because we've been training for over 30 years and know the art of throwing the rock."
Gushue acknowledges the initial uncertainty and worry that comes with the first game, especially with the big crowds at home. However, as the tournament progresses, he feels more at ease, and the team's performance reflects this growth.
The excitement doesn't end there! Later on Monday, Gushue and Young will face off in an all-Newfoundland and Labrador matchup at 7:30, adding another layer of anticipation to their already impressive performances. Will they continue their winning streak? Stay tuned to find out!
