Jazza Dickens: Debut title defense postponed after Hayato Tsutsumi sustains serious facial injury
The plan for Jazza Dickens to defend his WBA super-featherweight world title for the first time has been derailed by a injuries to his opponent, Hayato Tsutsumi. The bout, set for December 27 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will not go ahead as scheduled after Tsutsumi sustained an orbital floor fracture—a break beneath the eye socket—during training, according to Ring magazine.
Dickens, who was recently elevated to the status of WBA super-featherweight world champion following Lamont Roach Jr’s title stripping, holds a 36-5-0 record and has competed across three weight divisions. His last appearance came in July, when he defeated Russia’s Albert Batyrgaziev in four rounds to claim the interim belt and set up the chance to unify.
In a candid update shared on his YouTube channel, Dickens described waking up to the news as a jarring moment. "This morning, as soon as I opened my eyes and checked my messages, I got a body shot. That’s what it feels like to receive bad news. The fight’s off," he explained.
Dickens’ postponement marks a setback for a British champion who has already established himself across multiple levels of the sport. He sits among Britain’s current male titleholders alongside Nick Ball, Lewis Crocker, and Fabio Wardley. His career has spanned British glory at super-bantamweight and European success at featherweight, underscoring his versatility and ambition across weight classes.
