Measles Returns to Connecticut: A Wake-Up Call for Vaccination
Connecticut residents are being reminded of the ongoing threat of measles as the state's first case in over four years has been confirmed. The Department of Public Health (DPH) announced that an unvaccinated child under 10 from Fairfield County contracted the disease after traveling internationally.
The child's symptoms, which included a cough, runny nose, congestion, fever, and a characteristic rash, began several days after their return. This case highlights the importance of vaccination, especially for vulnerable populations like children under five.
Measles, a highly contagious virus, can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can lead to severe complications, particularly in young children. According to DPH Commissioner Manisha Juthani, MD, vaccination is the most effective way to protect against measles.
Juthani emphasizes, 'One dose of the measles vaccine provides approximately 93% protection, while two doses offer around 97% effectiveness. Ensuring timely vaccination is crucial to safeguarding our children and other vulnerable individuals from preventable diseases.'
The symptoms of measles typically appear 7-14 days after exposure. They often start with a fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a sore throat, followed by the appearance of a red or reddish-brown rash, usually beginning at the hairline and spreading across the body.
The recent surge in measles cases nationwide is alarming. In 2025, over 1,800 cases were reported, the highest number since the virus was declared eliminated in 2000, according to the International Vaccine Access Center. This trend underscores the need for continued vigilance and adherence to vaccination guidelines.
