In a significant move for the Miami Dolphins, Bobby Slowik has been elevated to the position of offensive coordinator, as confirmed by a reliable source to ESPN on Saturday. Slowik previously held the role of passing game coordinator during the 2025 season and even interviewed for the offensive coordinator position with the Philadelphia Eagles.
This promotion marks his second appointment this week under the newly appointed head coach, Jeff Hafley. Just a day earlier, the Dolphins announced the hiring of Chris Tabor, who previously served as the special teams coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, for the same position. Furthermore, it has come to light that the Dolphins had discussions with Clint Hurtt, the defensive line coach for the Eagles, regarding their vacant defensive coordinator role.
During his introductory press conference on Thursday, Hafley expressed his intention to lead the defensive play-calling while emphasizing that the offensive strategy will be tailored to the strengths of the players. "I don't simply hand over a playbook and insist we run a specific scheme without considering our personnel," he stated. "I prefer to closely analyze our talent to ensure we maximize their potential for success. I believe in certain foundational principles, such as establishing a robust running game and being physically dominant at the line of scrimmage – we must execute well even when opponents anticipate a run. That aspect is vital for my coaching philosophy.
Moreover, Hafley acknowledged the importance of building the offense around the quarterback and surrounding him with talented players, including a solid offensive line, skilled wide receivers, and effective running backs, so that the quarterback doesn't shoulder all the responsibility.
The Dolphins' passing game faced challenges last season, averaging only 180.5 passing yards per game, which positioned them at 25th among NFL teams. In light of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who may seek a different environment this offseason, Miami is poised to welcome a new signal caller in 2026.
On the other hand, the team's rushing offense emerged as a strong point, primarily fueled by running back De'Von Achane, who achieved an impressive milestone with 1,350 rushing yards, ranking fifth in the league. Hafley has committed to further developing the run game this coming season, expressing his preference for an under-center approach and a focus on running plays. "I believe in running the football because it's effective for play-action passes, which create separation between the second and third levels of defense. This strategy complicates things for defensive coordinators, and I aim to integrate similar concepts into our game plan," Hafley noted.
Before joining the Dolphins, Slowik spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. In his first year, the team ranked 12th in both total yards and scoring, but those numbers fell to 22nd and 19th, respectively, in 2024. Slowik's coaching background also includes tenures with the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders dating back to 2011, where he and Hafley were colleagues on the 49ers’ staff from 2017 to 2018.
