Rhys Webb's Take on Ospreys Crisis & All Blacks' Coach Search | Rugby News (2026)

A rugby legend speaks out: Rhys Webb's scathing assessment of the Ospreys' crisis.

The future of a rugby dynasty hangs in the balance.

Former Wales and Ospreys scrum-half, Rhys Webb, has unleashed a scathing critique of the long-standing issues that threaten to extinguish his former club. In a heartfelt post on Ruck, Webb exposes the crisis as a result of chronic 'poor leadership' and 'short-term thinking.'

But here's where it gets controversial...

The Ospreys' owners, Y11, are set to buy Cardiff, leaving the Ospreys' future beyond June 2027 uncertain. Webb argues that this crisis is not a sudden misfortune but a predictable outcome of years of mismanagement.

"The warning signs have been there for years," Webb asserts. "Players, staff, and supporters all felt it. Yet, nothing changed."

In his column, Webb highlights the uncertainty faced by players and staff, a situation he describes as a 'shambles.' He calls for a wake-up call for Welsh rugby as a whole, emphasizing the need for competence, accountability, and care.

"If nothing changes," Webb warns, "we will keep having the same conversations, just with fewer reasons to believe."

And this is the part most people miss...

The former Wales coach, Steve Hansen, has been approached by the All Blacks to potentially return as their head coach. Hansen, who guided the All Blacks to the 2015 World Cup victory, is one of several candidates being considered for the role.

Meanwhile, the URC club, the Bulls, is reportedly eyeing a move for the Dragons' fly-half, Tinus de Beer, as a replacement for the former Springbok, Johan Goosen.

In other news, England coach Steve Borthwick has made a bold decision, opting for Maro Itoje to start on the bench against Wales this weekend in their Six Nations opener.

So, what do you think? Is Webb's critique too harsh, or is it a much-needed wake-up call for Welsh rugby? And who do you think should be the next All Blacks head coach? Let us know in the comments!
