Did a UK cinema just spill the beans on a surprise Super Mario Galaxy Movie villain? It seems a local movie theater might have inadvertently given us a sneak peek at a significant character reveal for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie!
Initially, the Everyman Cinema's listing for the film included a plot synopsis that, while confirming the presence of Bowser Jr. (a character we already knew was coming), also hinted at another major, yet unannounced, character. The synopsis, which has since been removed, stated: “After defeating Bowser and saving Brooklyn, Mario faces Wario and Bowser Jr’s evil alliance. Now, alongside his friends and Yoshi, he must stop their plans for world domination.” This intriguing detail was first spotted by IGN.
But here's where it gets controversial... The cinema's website has since been updated. The synopsis is gone, replaced with a more general description: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros, and follows The Super Mario Bros Movie, which was released in 2023 and earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Both the 2023 film and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo.” This suggests the initial plot detail might have been a premature or accidental leak.
We already have some exciting official confirmations for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Bowser Jr., Rosalina, and Yoshi are all set to make an appearance. Benny Safdie, known for his work on The Smashing Machine and Uncut Gems, will be lending his voice to Bowser Jr. And for Rosalina, we have the incredibly talented Brie Larson, celebrated for her role as Captain Marvel and her Oscar-winning performance in Room.
Just last month, a new trailer dropped, giving us a glimpse of more characters from the Super Mario Bros 2 universe, including the much-loved Birdo. We'll also see the return of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, who made brief appearances in flashback scenes in the first film. It's wonderful to see these familiar faces returning!
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is slated for a theatrical release on April 1st. The talented team behind the first film is back, with Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directing, Matthew Fogel returning as screenwriter, and Brian Tyler composing the score.
